Habits that are harming your eyes

There are many ways in which you are hurting your eyes as you read this. Yes, you read it right!

If the contrast on the screen is too poor, if your screen is catching the glare, if your monitor settings are not proper, if you have been constantly looking at the screen, you are inadvertently hurting your eyes.

However, it is not just the screen that is harming your eyes. There are several other things that we continue doing throughout the day, not realizing the harm they do to our eyes.

Dehydration

Water is essential to life, and your eyes as well. Tears form a key component of the eyes, and when the body is dehydrated, their production is compromised as a result. Lack of sufficient lubrication then leads to dry eye syndrome.

In this condition, the dearth of tears causes eyes to become itchy, painful and red. It may also cause burning sensation in the eyes, alongside sensitivity to light.

Rubbing the eyes

Instead of rubbing them, try using cold compress. If something is stuck in your eyes, leading to the irritation therein, your tears will wash it away themselves. If that is still not helping, you can try gently splashing water into your eyes.

Your choice of eye makeup

You might love doing the daring eye liner or smoky eyes, but these habits might also be damaging your eyes. For eye makeup that goes inside of your eyes, like kohl or liner, using poor quality might cause irritation, infection, or allergic reaction. Therefore, do not compromise on the quality of the makeup.

Moreover, don’t share your eye makeup with others, lest you pass on the bacteria or get the bacteria.

Similarly, sleeping in with makeup is also very dangerous for your eyes. It allows bacteria to foster and cause an infection. Moreover, since as we sleep, our eyes recuperate and clean. However, when there is makeup therein, the cleaning process is hampered. Without proper cleaning, our eyes are susceptible to damage.

Leaving sunglasses

Sunglasses are not just important for making a fashion statement, but they also protect your eyes against damage from the ultraviolet rays from the Sun. Alongside prematurely aging the delicate areas around the eyes, sun exposure also increases the risk of diseases like cataracts, macular degeneration and even cancer.

Smoking

The box of cigarette may display damaged lungs, but that is not all there is to smoking. It damages almost all the organs in the body, including the eyes.

Smoking increases the risk of different diseases like cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and dry eyes.

Therefore, it is pertinent that you take steps to get rid of this atrocious habit.

Not visiting your eye doctor

Just like the rest of your body needs regular checkup, your eyes do too, especially if you have vision problems. It is especially important to regularly visit your doctor to ensure that your prescription is up to date.
